Operational Forecasting
Course Number: ATMO 605

Students enhance their forecasting expertise by preparing forecasts for presentation to the public through a variety of media. Classroom activities include weekly map discussions and analysis of current weather situations. Forecasting topics such as forecast verification, aviation forecast products, severe weather, flash flood, watches and warnings are examined. Prerequisite: ATMO 505.

  • Weekly Map Briefing and Discussion
    1. Instructor and student led
    2. Focus on Kansas and environs
    3. Focus on why current weather is happening

  • KU Weather-Line Forecast
    1. Students prepare forecasts for KU Weather-Line
    2. 7-day a week coverage

  • Site of the Week Forecast
    1. Students prepare a forecast for a variety of sites around the United States
    2. Students prepare a written discussion of their forecast for that site
    3. Sites changes every week

  • Weather Topic of the Week
    1. Short lecture on a variety of operational weather topics
    2. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
      1. Public Forecast Terminology
      2. NWS Forecast Discussions
      3. Forecast Verification
      4. Heavy Snow Forecasting
      5. Thunderstorm Forecasting
      6. Severe Weather Forecasting
      7. Flash Flood Forecasting
      8. Aviation Weather Forecast Products
      9. NWS Watch-Warning Program
