Dr. McNulty's career in meteorology has been primarily with the National Weather Service. He started as a research meteorologist at the National Severe Storms Forecast Center in Kasnas City, Missouri, looking for better ways to forecast thunderstorms. At the Weather Service Forecast Office in Topeka, Kansas, Dr. McNulty managed forecast and warning operations. For ten years he served as Chief, Hydrometeorology and Management Division, of the National Weather Service Training Center where, in addition to overseeing the training program, he also taught courses in winter weather forecasting, thunderstorm forecasting, and time management. His last position with the National Weather Service was as a Senior Aviation Meteorologist at the Aviation Weather Center in Kansas City.
Dr. McNulty received his Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology and oceanography, Master of Science in meteorology, and doctorate from New York University. During the Viet Nam War he served in the United States Navy as a weather officer at the Fleet Weather Central in Norfolk, VA. Upon release from active duty, he remained in the Naval Reserve and retired with the rank of Commander.
Dr. McNulty has taught courses at New York University and Polytechnic Institute of New York. He has also been an adjunct instructor at Washburn University in Topeka and Kansas City Kansas Community College. In addition, Dr. McNulty has been involved in development of web-based training modules, audio-teletraining and other forms of distance learning.
Dr. McNulty is active member of the American Meteorological Society (national and Kansas City chapter), National Weather Association, and American Geophysical Union. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals.
